Retesting in the Event You Fail Your NCLEX

The retest application is only for individuals who have previously applied for license by exam in North Dakota and need to retake the exam.

Please Note: Only complete this retest application if you have received a notification from the ND Board of Nursing that you failed your most recent attempt taking the NCLEX exam.

Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC): If you have moved to another NLC state as your Primary State of Residence (PSROR) since your last NCLEX attempt, you are required to apply for licensure in your new PSOR.

Request for Eligibility to Retest Application

  1. Complete the retest application inside the Nurse Portal. If you have not yet made a nurse profile inside the Nurse Portal, you will need to complete this before you can access the retest application.
    1. If you are applying to retest within one year of your initial eligibility test date or within one year of your most recent reapplication fee, you are required to pay the retest fee at the end of the online application.
      • If you have previously initiated the Criminal History Record Check (CHRC) more than 180 days ago you will also be assessed the CHRC processing fee with this application. If you are assessed this fee you will need to complete the CHRC process before you will be licensed upon passing the NCLEX exam.
    2. If you are applying to retest after one year of your initial eligibility test date or after one year of your most recent retest fee, you will be charged the initial license by examination fee at the end of the online application.
      • If you have previously initiated the CHRC more than 180 days ago you will also be assessed the CHRC processing fee with this application. If you are assessed this fee you will need to complete the CHRC process before you will be licensed upon passing the NCLEX exam.
  2. Complete a new registration with Pearson Vue at https://www.nclex.com/. This should be done at the same time you complete the online retest application to the ND Board of Nursing. Pearson Vue will notify the board office of your registration.

Please Note: Work authorizations are not issued for retesting. You are no longer able to practice as a graduate registered or practical nurse once you have failed the NCLEX licensing examination.

Criminal History Record Check

If you are required to complete a Criminal History Record Check (per item 1a & b above), instructions for the CHRC can be found at https://www.ndbon.org/NurseLicensure/CHRC/Index.asp. Please read and follow these instructions carefully.

Eligibility

When you have completed the registration process with Pearson VUE and have submitted the online retest application, your application will be reviewed and when approved by the ND Board of Nursing, you will be deemed eligible to test. Pearson Vue will then e-mail you an Authorization to Test (ATT) to the email address you have on file with them.

Address Changes

If you have any address changes after completing this application, make sure to complete an Address Change on the Nurse Portal under Other Applications.
